How to learn aerial straps without a coach near you
Oct 06, 2026Short answer: You can learn aerial straps without a coach in your city. You cannot learn them well without feedback. You need three things: a clear order to learn the skills, a program for your level, and a straps coach who watches your videos and tells you what to fix.
Why it is so hard to find a straps coach
Straps coaches are rare. Many studios teach silks, lyra or pole, but not straps. Where a private coach exists, a session costs around $80 to $150 an hour.
So most people try to build a plan from scattered videos, with no order and no feedback.
What goes wrong when you train alone
- You follow the wrong order. You copy tricks in the order you see them online, not in the order your body is ready for.
- You stay where you are. You repeat what you already know, or you jump to a move you are not ready for.
- You cannot feel your own mistakes. Small errors in shoulder position or body shape are almost impossible to feel from the inside. On video, a coach sees them fast.
What to do instead
- Follow an order. Choose your grip first. Then basic static positions, like the meathook and skin the cat. Then spins, simple swings, inversions and flags. Dynamic combinations come last.
- Film your training. A clip shows what you cannot feel.
- Get feedback from a straps coach. It does not have to be in person. Send your video and ask what to fix.
- Train short and often. Three short sessions a week take you further than one long session from time to time.

Do you need a coach next to you?
No. You do not need a coach standing next to you at every session.
You do need structured guidance and real feedback, especially in your first months.
This is why Straps Academy exists
Straps Academy brings straps artists together in one community, wherever they train. The training is adapted to each level, so everyone can progress. You post your clips. Coaches watch them and tell you what to fix.

“Yes, I've made progress! What I value most is the structured program.”

Torrie had never held a flag. Now Torrie holds it for more than 10 seconds.
“I genuinely believe Straps Academy is the most comprehensive online straps resource currently available. It goes beyond a library of skills: there's an emphasis on understanding the movement, building the required capacity, receiving feedback and actually progressing.”
Torrie Tay, 10/10
One safety rule
If you train on your own straps, have your rigging point installed and checked by a professional rigger. Do not guess this part.
